To enjoy life we need healthy planet and for that we need to believe in sustainable and slow fashion.
Defining Sustainable and Slow Fashion
Sustainable Fashion, also called eco fashion, is environmentally safe fashion, a system that can carry on indefinitely without having a significant impact on the environment. It goes hand in hand with slow fashion.
The current mass production of garments, tagged as “Fast Fashion”, has been contributing to the problems of sustainability by leeching on fossil fuels and fresh-water sources to a great extent. Not to forget that the mass production is preying on the livelihood of skilled artisans.
While the roots of Fast Fashion grip our lives too tightly, sustainable fashion is slowly trying to liberate us from its grasp. Not only that, slow fashion also gives an opportunity for the talented local craftsmen to break free from the shadows of big designer tags and make a respectable living for their family.
Clothes are way to express who you are without speaking a single word. They not only confine us in themselves, but also define us. While, we are almost always too keyed up to stay in style and get our hands on the latest works of fashion, we just tend to overlook one of the most pivotal sides of buying clothes – the big picture of the impact of this apparel on our mother earth.

The pros of Sustainable Fashion
While fast fashion grips the masses in today’s time, its slow and sustainable counterpart serves a bigger purpose of protecting the resources for our future. Against the common belief of slow fashion being too rusty and rag-like, it proves to be a perfect blend of ethics with aesthetics.
Adding to the protection it provides to the environment, it also provides a support system to the millions of unrecognised but skillful artisans who have silently carried the burden of preserving our traditional heritage for ages.
Nature has always nurtured humans, catering to their every need. So, obviously, anything coming from nature can’t prove to be harmful to us. Sustainable fashion has also been proved to be skin-friendly, with no harmful dyes coming in contact with the skin. Besides, it also guarantees that the piece of apparel you are so attached with has been made in a safe environment and the artists who made it were paid a fair wage.
Thus, sustainable fashion makes a trident of advantages, with environment, artists and end users being the three prongs of its entire being.
“Slow” and steady wins the race
The first story every one of us must have come across in our life is that of the hare and the tortoise and the first moral we learn is – “Slow and steady wins the race”. Same goes for the fashion industry. While in today’s times, fast fashion might have gained upon slow fashion, but people are slowly learning the importance of sustainability.
Humans have been hounding the environment for years like wolves. And nature hasn’t been complaining. It is the need of the hour that they stop taking our resources for granted and learn the importance of preserving and giving something back.
Let us not be ‘Wolves in a sheep’s clothing’ and try to be ‘Wolves in sustainable clothing’!
We, at Vritti Designs, have been trying to play our role towards encouraging the acceptance of slow fashion in every person’s life. We endorse traditional art from every nooks and corners of India.
